Teledyne LeCroy intros packet capture, inspection system

Teledyne LeCroy has introduced the Hammerhead for SierraNet Protocol Analysis systems, supplied with the Net Protocol Suite release, v1.85. According to the company, the solution offer Ethernet analysis options for the Wireshark community, which the company said is a first in the seamless integration of a dedicated, line-rate protocol analyser with the Wireshark network packet capture application.

Hammerhead combines SierraNet's recording abilities with Wireshark's ubiquitous user interface to supply complete, upper level traffic captures that are seamless and universal, stated Teledyne. Net Protocol Suite projects may be called from the Hammerhead utility directly. Those projects may include all current Net Suite traffic capturing options, i.e. pre-capture filtering, event based triggering, trace memory depth and trigger position selection.

Additionally, when the SierraNet's nanosecond trigger granularity is required, the Net Protocol Suite software provides users the most advanced and complete tool set for creating complex and detailed capture solutions, which include the industries only event timer and counter functions, flaunted the company.

The SierraNet family of protocol analysis test tools are the defining platforms for pin-point, deep packet inspection of events and issues affecting high-speed storage and fabric interconnections, during design and validation and in the data centre. Traffic capture occurs within the analyser's dedicated in-band, line-rate probing technology, providing bit level detail of the data stream. The SierraNet offers the most accurate depth of triggering functionality, encompassing all physical and logical OSI layers, ensuring lossless packet captures for in-depth analysis, Teledyne added.

Wireshark, the "go to" packet capture tool for Ethernet professionals, has been very effective leveraging fabric resident ports to collect packets up to 1G traffic rates, the company said. At today's speeds of 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet and 16Gb/s Fibre Channel, traditional data tap options present challenges as they may mask access, miss or drop data packets, or reroute the traffic of interest. SierraNet is purposely built for high-speed serial data capture, and won't impede or drop packets of the link(s) under test.

Used in combination with other fabric management tools, the SierraNet system claims to reduce debug and test schedules, lower resource costs and close the loop for concise root-cause determination of challenges faced in today's high-speed Ethernet networks.
