Measurement Computing to merge with Data Translation

Keywords:Measurement Computing? Data Translation? USB? data acquisition?

Measurement Computing and Data Translation have revealed that they will merge. Data Translation will operate as a subsidiary of Measurement Computing. The two locations are about an hour's drive from each other. The merger won't affect Data Translation sales and technical support, the companies stated. In addition, Data Translation will maintain its own web site.

Although both companies manufacture PC plug-in and USB data acquisition systems, the two generally serve different markets. Data Translation has always been revered for its high-performance data-acquisition products while Measurement Computing is known for its lower-cost products. In recent years, Data Translation has moved more into USB and Ethernet-based systems with multichannel products. But, there is some overlap in product lines, particularly in the small USB data-acquisition module area. DT has long competed with National Instruments in the plug-in board and USB markets.

Started in 1973 by Fred Molinari, Data Translation was one of the first, if not the first, companies to develop plug-in data acquisition boards for the IBM PC. Molinari gained some notoriety for his colourful ads that appeared in EDN, Test & Measurement World, and many other publications. Here's one such ad that ran in Test & Measurement World in 1998.
