As the iPad Pro hits consumer hands this month, iFixit has taken to ripping it apartwhich is what they do in the name of reparability and specialised repair kits. Thanks to their work, engineers get to freely look inside products and find out what makes them sing or suck.

But first, let me refresh your memory on what Apple is selling here. The WiFi-only 128GB model sells for $950 - $1 in the United States. The cellular version will cost you another $130. The key specs from Apple are:

  • A9X chip with 64bit architecture
  • M9 motion coprocessor
  • 12.9-inch LED-backlit multi-touch display with 2,732px x 2,048px resolution at 264ppi
  • 8MP rear-facing camera with f/2.4 aperture and 1.2MP front-facing camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • 2 microphones and 4 "self-balancing" speakers
  • Fingerprint sensor, 3-axis gyro, Accelerometer, Barometer, ambient light sensor
  • WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac); dual channel (2.4GHz and 5GHz); HT80 with MIMO
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA; CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B; LTE; Assisted GPS and GLONASS for the cellular model
  • 38.5-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery

Apart from this, you can add the pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard that connects through, um..., a Smart Connector.

OK, so this is what it looks like on the inside.
