Server system combines processor, storage

Synergy's secret sauce is its software, which lets users manage systems via a programming interface as they would an external cloud service. "My hardware has an API in it...composability is built into the hardware with embedded virtualisation so the hardware understands how to troubleshoot itself," said Gary Thome, a veteran HP blade developer and the chief engineer for Synergy.

For example, frames automatically discover new resources when they are linked. In addition, a module in the management bay acts as an image streamer with boot images for operating systems, hypervisors and drivers that can automatically be spread across the system. It uses a custom version of HP's existing ILO management ASIC.

"The API is really the big difference here, creating one language for compute, storage and the fabric," said Jed Scaramella, a senior server analyst for International Data Corp. "They have a large installed base that this will be very appealing to, and it should do well against Cisco's UCS servers, which are doing well," he said.

Hewlett Packard is the world's largest server vendor followed by Dell and Cisco. The split into a client company (HP Inc.) and an infrastructure vendor (HPE) isn't expected to change its position with business users.

"Most people have a different laptop strategy from a data centre and server strategy; they are completely different systems," Scaramella said.

The system is geared to consolidate a mix of traditional, cloud and mobile apps on a single systems, controlled through a single API, said Paul Miller, a VP of marketing for HPE.

Synergy has been in development for several years, said Thome. The recent split of HP did not impact the effort, he added.

"I'm in the same office and tackle much the same work I did before" the split, he said.

Gb Ethernet fabrics link up to 20 separate frames into a system.
