Keywords:Rohde & Schwarz? oscilloscope? WiFi? smartphone?

Rohde & Schwarz has entered the handheld oscilloscope market with the roll out of the RTH Scope Rider series. Offering 10bit resolution and a maximum 500MHz bandwidth, the device enables measurements in the field for up to four hours on a battery charge and store the data to an SD memory card. Data can then be downloaded to a computer through a USB port or through wired or wireless Ethernet.

In addition to storing and downloading measurements, the Scope Rider can turn into a WiFi hotspot. That lets you control the instruments from a smartphone, tablet or notebook computer. There's no need to install an app because the Scope Rider has its own Web server; a browser is all you need. You don't even need a tablet or smartphone to operate the Scope Rider from a touchscreen because the instrument has one.

RTH Scope Rider series

Besides being an oscilloscope, The RTH Scope Rider series is available in two or four channels with bandwidths of 60MHz, 100MHz, 200MHz, 350MHz and 500MHz. You can expand bandwidth by purchasing an upgrade key. As of release date, bandwidth upgrades are based on the 60MHz model only, according to R&S oscilloscope product manager Rich Markley. All models can place up to 50,000 waveforms/s on the colour display. The four-channel models include a multimetre.

The RTH Scope Rider's IP51 certified housing offers protection from environmental hazards such as dust and dripping water. It's fully isolated and meets the measurement category requirements defined in IEC 61010-1 for CAT IV up to 600V and for CAT III up to 1kV.

You can add mixed-signal capability to all models and you can add protocol analysis for buses such as I2C, SPI and RS-232/422/485. The RTH oscilloscopes also have an optional eight-channel MSO option for looking at digital signals. Prices are shown below.
