Linear Tech controller yields load current-monitoring output

Linear Technology has rolled out the LTC4236 controller that offers a load current-monitoring output. In addition, it boasts ideal diode-OR and hot-swap functions for two power rails by controlling external N-channel MOSFETs. MOSFETs acting as ideal diodes replace two high-power Schottky diodes and associated heat sinks, reducing voltage drop, power loss and board area.

A downstream hot-swap MOSFET allows safe board insertion and removal from a live backplane, indicated the company. The controller's low-offset ground-referenced output signal enables load current measurement with an external ADC.


The LTC4236 regulates a 15mV forward voltage drop across the ideal diode MOSFETs to prevent DC reverse current, while ensuring smooth current transfer during supply switch-over. According to the company, ideal diode fast turn-on and turn-off operation of ?0.5?s slashes output voltage droop and transient reverse current. In an output short-circuit condition, the LTC4236 further reduces its 25mV current limit and runs an adjustable timer to limit MOSFET power dissipation.

Operating from an input supply of 2.9V to 18V, the controller can be used for redundant power supplies, high-availability systems and servers, and network infrastructure. The device is available in two versions: one remains off after an overcurrent fault, while the other automatically turns on with a 0.15 per cent duty cycle.

Prices for the LTC4236 housed in a 28-pin 4mm x 5mm QFN package start at $4.25 each in lots of 1000 units.
