NXP Semiconductors has developed the i.MX 7 series applications processor for wearables with artificial intelligence capabilities. The processor now enables Orcam's wearable personal assistant product, OrCam-MyMe, to continuously process visual and audio signals to create an "augmented attention" experience that enables context-based applications. It aims to improve human wellness by acting as a "personal assistant" to its users, with potential development of applications such as real-time profiling of people, tracking eating and fitness activities, monitoring facial expressions and summarizing daily habits.

The i.MX 7 series processor provides the potential for innovative, security and long battery life in wearable computing and Internet of Things (IoT) end product applications. The i.MX 7Dual processor was chosen by OrCam based on these features to power MyMe.

"The i.MX 7Dual processor implements a heterogeneous multicore architecture with the ARM Cortex-A7 core used for deep learning processing and the Cortex-M4 core for audio processing, " said Professor Shashua, co-founder of OrCam.

The NXP i.MX 7 series is the latest generation of power efficient and full-featured applications processors from the successful and broadly deployed i.MX platform. Based on the Cortex-A7 and Cortex-M4 cores, i.MX 7 series operates up to 1GHz for Cortex-A7 and up to 200MHz for Cortex-M4. The Cortex-A7 and Cortex-M4 achieve processor core efficiency levels of 100W/MHz and 70W/MHz, respectively. Moreover, the new low-power state retention (LPSR) mode significantly contributes to the power efficiency.
