According to Imagination Technologies, the PowerVR Series5 video encoders represent an IP family designed to provide high quality encoding for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), while optimising silicon area and bandwidth usage. It supports multiple resolutions and bit rates and meets requirements from 720p@30fps to 4K@60fps and beyond. The first three IP cores in the series include encoders optimised for high-efficiency mass-market, high-performance mainstream mobile and ultra-high definition (UHD) content creation.

HEVC/H.265 video compression is designed to provide video quality similar to that of the existing AVC/H.264 coding standard but with only about half the bit rate, which is essential for the HD and UHD video content transmitted over bandwidth-limited connections.

In terms of quality, the Series5 encoder is designed to deliver all the important advantages of HEVC in terms of quality and bitrate reduction compared to H.264. In addition, Imagination says, this architecture integrates advanced search algorithms and includes a complete toolset implementation and optimised rate control algorithms, enabling the PowerVR solution to reach the same quality while typically requiring 30% fewer bits than other similar products. The encoder supports 1080p@240fps high frame rate encoding, enabling faster than real-time transcoding, slow-motion recording and multi-stream encoding.

MIPS CPUs: Powering differentiation

The Imagination MIPS Warrior CPU family is winning market recognition on the strength of its increasingly broad product portfolio and unique technology roadmap. The company recently added new members to this product line, including embedded 32bit M-class M6200/M6250 CPUs and 64bit P-class P6600 CPU, to meet needs towards product differentiation through features, performance and business goals.

According to Mark Throndson, the MIPS Business Development Director at Imagination, the current MIPS portfolio ranges from entry-level to high-performance products, comprising Warrior M-class, Warrior I-class and Warrior P-class CPUs. The latest MIPS R6 architecture integrates several features, including hardware virtualisation, SIMD and hardware multi-threading. Since the MIPS64 and MIPS32 are fully compatible, MIPS64 architecture can directly run MIPS32 software without mode switching. MIPS also leverages advanced power management for dynamic power levels.
