IHS: iPhone SE, an amalgamation of 3 generations of iPhones

According to the preliminary estimate of the Teardown and Cost Benchmarking Service by IHS, the cost of building the new iPhone SE smartphone is $160. On the other hand, the 16 gigabytes of NAND memory of the U.S. version of the entry-level iPhone SE has a bill of materials (BOM) of $156.20, with additional manufacturing costs, which sums the total to $160, based on an IHS teardown of a phone purchased from an Apple store dated March 31, 2016. The iPhone SE 16GB model is priced at $399.
Andrew Rassweiler, senior director of cost benchmarking services at IHS, said "The iPhone SE represents an amalgamation of three iPhone generations -- iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s -- rolled into something altogether new. Despite its physical resemblance to the iPhone 5s, the resulting product is far superior. In fact, the only significant tradeoffs a consumer would make with the iPhone SE against the iPhone 6s is smaller size and lower screen resolution."
