Boston Scientific's Penang plant slated to open in 2017

Boston Scientific, a global medical solutions provider, announced their plans of constructing a medical device manufacturing plant in Batu Kawan Industrial Park in Penang, Malaysia. Construction of the facility is targeted to begin in the first half of 2016 and scheduled for completion in the second half of 2017.

Boston Scientific eyes the site and facility to accommodate at least a decade's worth of growth, with the facility's space being capable of manufacturing new products, have the capacity for additional volume and added capabilitiespossibly including research and development (R&D) or distribution.

According to the research firm Euromonitor, the medical device industry is projected to grow by 6% to reach US$315 billion in 2016. The Penang facility, which involves investments running more than hundreds of millions of ringgit, is to initially establish a solid foundation for manufacturing capabilities and capacity.

The group, having a total of 23,000 employees across 40 countries, is initially anticipating having more than 400 employees in the new Penang site within four years of operation.
