What is SMTP?
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is a TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving email. Usually users use SMTP for sending email. Since it is limited in its ability to queue messages at the receiving end, it is usually used with one of two other protocols, POP3 or IMAP, for receiving messages. Most mail programs allow users to specify a SMTP server and a POP server. The SMTP is usually assigned port 25 over the TCP.
